Near-Term Quantum Networks: Applications, Implementations, and Opportunities
01 June 2025
Optica Quantum 2.0 Conference and Exhibition
Hilton San Francisco Union Square
San Francisco, California USA
Distributed entangled quantum states can enable a quantum advantage for many applications in the fields of quantum sensing, communications, and computing, but creating such states remains a challenge. Realizing a source of distributed entanglement that operates with high rates and low errors requires a high-performance quantum network. There are currently a variety of quantum networking architectures and implementations being pursued, targeting a range of scales and application spaces. This workshop will bring together a community of experts to identify:
1) Application spaces that are of a broad interest nationally
2) Specific network performance requirements for these applications
3) Hardware implementations that hold the most promise for realizing these requirements
4) Current quantum workforce needs and opportunities for workforce development.
There will be a focus on near-term applications that can be realized on the 1 to 10-year time scale. This workshop is organized by the NSF NQVL ASPEN-Net Pilot Project team in partnership with Optica. The ASPEN-Net project is pursuing an all-optical approach to quantum networking with the aim to construct multiple quantum networking testbeds nationwide. This workshop will help to identify future users, collaborators, and partners for the ASPEN-Net project, and will inform the development of a workforce development plan and a strategic plan for the construction of the ASPEN-Net testbeds.
